About the role
As a student in an approved registered nurse or practical nurse school of nursing, the Nurse Extern participates in clinical work under the direction of an RN, assists in the individualized care of patients to achieve their highest level of wellness, works cooperatively with the healthcare team, and performs designated clinical procedures and nonclinical support tasks within the nurse extern scope. This Mercy Jefferson Winter Externship is located in Festus, MO 63028 and runs from December 21, 2026 through January 15, 2027. The paid externship provides a hands‑on learning experience that bridges classroom knowledge with real‑world practice, allowing students to rotate through various units while learning directly alongside Mercy nurses.
Responsibilities
- Assist in individualized patient care to promote wellness
- Perform designated clinical procedures
- Carry out nonclinical support tasks within the extern scope
- IV therapy
- Foley care
- NG tube care and tube feeding
- Ostomy care
- Point‑of‑care testing, phlebotomy, and specimen collection
- Simple dressing changes
- Head‑to‑toe assessments
- Trach care
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an approved registered nurse or practical nurse school of nursing
- Completed at least two semesters of nursing school
- Completed a minimum of one round of clinicals prior to the start of the externship
