About the role

As a volunteer mentor, you act as the legal representative and trusted confidant for an adult who, due to an intellectual disability, psychiatric condition, dementia, or acquired brain injury, struggles to advocate for their own care and well-being. You visit them regularly to build a relationship, understand their wishes, and help them make informed decisions about their health and daily life. For example, you might assist with choices about medical treatments, ensure care agreements are followed, and support them in maintaining as much personal autonomy as possible.

The mentorship is a court-appointed legal protection measure, and our foundation is designated by the court to provide and support mentors. We provide training and ongoing guidance to prepare you for this role.

Responsibilities

• Regularly visit and build a trusting relationship with your mentee.
• Help articulate your mentee’s wishes, preferences, and concerns.
• Assist in making decisions about care, medical treatments, and daily life.
• Act as a liaison between your mentee and their care providers to ensure agreements are honored.
• Support your mentee in maintaining personal autonomy and self-determination.

Requirements

• Ability to empathize deeply with others and understand their perspectives.
• Strong communication skills and confidence in making decisions.
• Minimum education level of MBO-4 (secondary vocational education).
• Availability of at least 4 hours per month.
