Mental Health Therapist - Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit

Sign-on bonus available with a 2-year work commitment: $10,000 for dependent licensees (LPC, LSW, MFT) and $15,000 for independent licensees (LPCC, LISW, IMFT).

Full-time: 40 hours per week
Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
1st shift: 8:00 AM – 6:30 PM

About the Role

The Mental Health Therapist I applies graduate-level counseling or social work skills under the direct supervision of an independently licensed staff member, as stipulated by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. This position completes the 3,000 hours of supervised clinical work required for state licensure to obtain clinical endorsement for independent practice.

Responsibilities

• Conducts initial comprehensive patient and family psychosocial assessments and triages care accordingly.
• Communicates assessment, treatment, interventions, and interdisciplinary care plans through documentation and meetings such as patient rounds.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide competent care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of patients regardless of age.
• Provides case management for assigned patients, including consultation and collaboration with hospital and community professionals and programs.
• Uses evidence-based trauma and risk assessment tools, applies crisis intervention skills, and determines the need for referrals to the Emergency Department or community agencies.
• Completes documentation ethically and in a timely manner as expected by the department.
• Performs other duties as required.

Specialized Responsibilities

• Outpatient Add-On: Completes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions alongside other evidence-based treatment modalities to assist patients and families with individualized service plans.
• PHP/IOP Add-On: Uses CBT and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) interventions through individual, group, and family therapy to support clients in achieving therapeutic goals.
• PIRC Add-On:
  • Works in a fast-paced environment conducting risk assessments and using crisis intervention skills.
  • Triages and assesses intake calls from families and community referral sources.
  • Conducts preliminary diagnostic assessments via telephone to evaluate the need for services for children and adolescents.
  • Performs comprehensive risk assessments in person (ED) or via telehealth to ensure continuity of care.
  • Engages in consultation and collaboration with hospital and community professionals to develop and communicate crisis treatment plans and follow-up recommendations.
• Substance Use Add-On:
  • Uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and other evidence-based practices, such as Motivational Interviewing.
  • Involves families in therapy sessions and provides behavior modification techniques as clinically indicated.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Social Work or Clinical Mental/Behavioral Health Counseling (required).
• Licensed as a Social Worker (LSW), Professional Counselor (LPC), or Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) (required).
• Must meet Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Staff Credentialing/Privileging criteria and become credentialed within 1 year of hire.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant experience (preferred).

Skills

• Experience with electronic medical record software (e.g., EPIC) is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
• Experience providing clinical services via telehealth is preferred.
