About the role
Oceans Behavioral Hospital Pasadena focuses on helping adults and seniors manage mental health issues through various inpatient and outpatient psychiatric counseling and treatment options. The Mental Health Technician (MHT) plays a crucial role in supporting the nursing staff by performing routine tasks and assisting in patient care.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to professional standards, follow policies and procedures, and comply with federal, state, and local requirements, including Joint Commission standards.
- Effectively apply supportive behavior and employ de-escalation and therapeutic interventions when assisting patients with unacceptable behavior.
- Inventories patient belongings, secures contraband, and conducts unit safety checks.
- Complies with standard/universal precautions and infection control policies, attends required in-services, and keeps informed.
- Implements patient care activities under the direction and supervision of licensed nursing personnel, performs vital signs, weights, ADLs, intake and output documentation, nutritional monitoring, and communicates findings to the nurse.
- Affirms patient care activities to meet the age-specific, disability, and cultural sensitivity needs of each patient.
- Communicates and documents patient observations and data effectively in the patient record; documents patient departures, significant occurrences, and patient observation findings accurately and within defined timelines.
- Communicates outcomes of assigned tasks to nursing staff promptly; communicates follow-up on patient care responsibilities; and ensures continuity of care.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent with CNA certification or at least 6 months of prior bedside, direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work well with diverse populations.
- Knowledge of age, disability, and cultural specific needs to communicate effectively with specialized populations.
- Good physical and mental health, evidenced by a warm empathetic attitude, respect for dignity, worth, and potentiality of clients, and a high sense of personal integrity.
- Successfully completed CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral de-escalation program.
Qualifications
- Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Physical requirement: Approximately 90% of the time spent inside a building offering protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

Pay
