About the role
The School-Based Mental Health Clinician primarily works out of the School-Based Health Center (SBHC) to support a unique healthcare model for comprehensive physical, mental, and preventive health services for youth and adolescents. This role provides direct patient care through brief interventions, referral, coordination of specialty mental health services, and psycho-education, reducing barriers such as cost, transportation, and confidentiality concerns.
Responsibilities
- Work closely as part of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with primary care providers to support the behavioral, physical, and psychosocial needs of a diverse patient population within a school-based health center setting.
- Assess, treat, and manage patients effectively within an integrated behavioral healthcare model, assisting in the development of patient care plans and making referrals as needed.
- Plan and provide psychological assessment, diagnosis, and brief psychotherapeutic interventions in a primary care setting.
- Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with community partners, public health, and the medical community, including local school districts, DHS-Child Welfare, County Juvenile Department, and local health clinics.
- Gather, track, and present outcome data.
- Provide one-to-one, group, and family counseling, case management, and mental health outreach.
- Document services in client files and collaborate with treatment team members and other agencies.
- Lead psycho-educational, skill development, anger management, parenting, process, gender-specific, and family groups as assigned.
- Remain closely linked to the Mental Health Team/BestCare and attend weekly mental health team meetings (e.g., child/family team meetings).
- Stay informed about the local social service network to assist students and families with accessing resources such as housing, counseling, food banks, and local medical services.
- Maintain documentation within agency timelines in client files.
- Model appropriate counselor behavior, train, and orient new staff to the program.
- Complete training/certification required for mental health crisis work and participate in the after-hours MH crisis rotation.
- Work hours in BestCare’s clinic depending on caseload size and service demand.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Clinical Program Supervisor or Program Director.
