About the Role
The Medication Aide helps create a joyful and vibrant community by caring for residents and administering and/or assisting with the self-administration of routine and non-routine, non-injectable medications by oral, rectal, or topical means in accordance with physician orders and nursing practices as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.
Responsibilities
- Performs tasks assigned by the Director of Nursing Services, including vital signs, residents' weights, applying creams/ointments, collecting specimens, and lifting, moving, and transporting residents using proper body mechanics or lifting devices.
- Maintains accurate records of medications and treatments administered or omitted on each resident’s clinical record, including reasons for omission or administration of prn medication.
- Records narcotics administered or received on the appropriate controlled drug count sheet and reports all medication errors immediately.
- Reports and records changes in resident conditions, incidents, and accidents to the Director of Nursing Services, physician, and family members as indicated.
- Communicates with physicians, pharmacies, and families to ensure timely receipt of medications.
- Provides direct resident care while promoting dignity, independence, and choice; observes and reports residents' physical and mental conditions.
- Communicates effectively and tactfully with residents, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
- Assists with or performs Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as needed and documents care services accurately.
- Greets residents, visitors, and staff courteously while respecting dignity, confidentiality, and individual rights.
- Follows community fire safety, infection control practices, and promptly reports unsafe conditions or equipment.
- Adheres to standard precautions, safe work practices, and established safety/disaster plans; reports and corrects unsafe working conditions.
- Maintains cleanliness and order in the medication room, restores medication and equipment, and removes outdated or discontinued medication for return to the pharmacy.
- Attends and participates in required meetings and trainings; stays current on assigned tasks and duties.
- Performs other tasks and duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current CNA/HCA license in good standing.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Medication pass certification per state requirements.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- Valid Food Handlers card.
- Pass a criminal background and fingerprint check.
- General computer literacy with knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Working knowledge of office machines (copier, fax, phone system, etc.).
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit, talk, or hear.
- Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally required to stand, walk, kneel, stoop, and squat.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; constantly lifting 25 to 40 pounds.
- Frequently required to reach below shoulder height.
- Must stand for 6 out of 8 hours.
