Member Experience Specialist
The Dispatch is a member-funded publication covering politics, policy, and culture from a fact-based, conservative perspective. Launched in 2019, we operate on the belief that readers prefer quality over outrage-driven media. More than 40,000 members now fund our reporting directly, allowing us to prioritize substance over social media algorithms. We also own and operate SCOTUSblog, the definitive source for Supreme Court coverage for over 20 years. Our members expect direct, human engagement—and they deserve it.
About the role
We’re hiring a Member Experience Specialist to own member support across both The Dispatch and SCOTUSblog. This is a dedicated in-house role designed to provide personalized, high-quality support as our readership and listenership grow. You’ll be the human connection for members when issues arise—whether it’s a login problem, a missing newsletter, a podcast feed error, an expired credit card, a gift membership mix-up, or an unshipped merch order. Your goal is to resolve these issues quickly and warmly, turning frustrations into positive experiences. This isn’t a scripted, ticket-closing job; our members are deeply invested in our work, and every interaction is an opportunity to strengthen their loyalty.
Why This Role Matters Now
A member who receives a warm, specific, and genuinely helpful response is far more likely to renew. As our readership grows, we’re bringing this function in-house to ensure high-quality support and to capture valuable feedback. Every login failure, confusing checkout step, or cancellation reason is data that only you will see firsthand. Right now, that feedback gets resolved one email at a time and then disappears. We want someone who not only closes the ticket but also tells us what needs fixing.
Responsibilities
- Member support across both publications:
- Own the members@thedispatch.com inbox and phone line as the first (and often only) point of contact, ensuring fast response times and high-quality resolutions.
- Resolve account issues: logins, password resets, duplicate accounts, billing and payment methods, gift memberships, guest passes, plan changes, and refunds.
- Troubleshoot newsletter deliverability (suppression lists, spam complaints, inbox filtering) and private podcast feed setup across Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts, and other platforms.
- Process discount and sponsorship programs: student, military, teacher, clergy, nonprofit, and retiree verification and code issuance.
- Support SCOTUSblog’s growing subscription business.
- Retention and saves:
- Own the cancellation conversation: every member who writes in to cancel receives a real reply and a real offer before processing.
- Log cancellation reasons and turn them into actionable insights for the growth and editorial teams.
- Spot at-risk patterns early and flag them for intervention.
- The merch store:
- Own the store inbox: order status, sizing questions, product inquiries, exchanges, returns, and shipping errors (e.g., packages sent to the wrong Springfield).
- Coordinate with our fulfillment partner on unresolved issues and follow up until the member is satisfied.
- Flag recurring fulfillment problems to the colleague who manages the store.
- Community and comments:
- Moderate comment sections against published standards, including warnings, temporary suspensions, and explanations for enforcement actions.
- Handle logistics and member follow-up for member-only programming, such as live briefings, town halls, and subscriber webinars.
- Route corrections, editorial feedback, and pitches to the appropriate teams and ensure members know their input was heard.
- Making the product better:
- Turn inbox insights into a recurring "friction report" highlighting where members get stuck, recurring issues, and potential fixes.
- File bugs with the product team and follow them through to resolution, not just the backlog.
- Own and improve member-facing FAQs, help content, and response templates to reduce repetitive work.
- Maintain an up-to-date support playbook as we launch new features and change platforms.
Requirements
- One to three years of experience in customer support, member services, subscriber operations, or a comparable role where you were responsible for writing replies.
- Strong writing skills: the ability to compose clear, warm, and unfussy emails that don’t read like form letters.
- Technical curiosity: you don’t need to be a coder, but you should be the kind of person who can troubleshoot issues like ad-blockers or VPNs interfering with the comment section—or at least describe the problem clearly.
- Comfort with subscription and billing tools: we use Piano, Iterable, Stripe, Shopify, Asana, and Zapier. We care more about your ability to learn systems quickly than prior experience with ours.
- Patience and a thick skin: when members are frustrated, it’s your job to listen, defuse the situation, and leave them feeling heard.
- Sound judgment: knowing when to refund, when to save a subscription, when to escalate, and when to just fix the problem.
- If you’re using an LLM to help with your application, include the phrase “bananas foster” in your cover letter.
Nice to have
- Experience supporting a subscription or membership product, especially during a launch or platform migration.
- Familiarity with podcast distribution, email deliverability, e-commerce fulfillment, or paywall mechanics.
- Community or forum moderation experience.
- Interest in politics, policy, the Supreme Court, and law.
Who We're Looking For
- Someone who prioritizes resolving problems over closing tickets and understands the difference.
- Someone who notices when the same question keeps coming up and takes action to address it.
- Someone who can juggle multiple open threads without dropping any.
- Someone who wants to own the entire function, not just a slice of it, and is comfortable being the sole owner of this role.
A Note on Onboarding
You won’t be dropped into this role cold. The team currently handling this work will stay on for your first month to ensure a smooth handoff, covering accounts, the playbook, edge cases, and even introducing you to members who write in regularly. This will be a real transition, not just a documentation dump.
Location
This role is open to remote candidates, but those in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area are welcome to work from our Washington, D.C. office.
