About the Role
This position assists in the overall operation of the Unit Medication Room and distributes patients’ medications from filled prescriptions.
Responsibilities
- Medication Administration - Safely administer medications to patients in accordance with established protocols and provider orders, including confirmation of medication consumption. Demonstrate basic medication knowledge, including purposes, common side effects, and appropriate administration routes. Utilize reliable resources to look up unfamiliar medications and verify proper usage.
- Documentation - Ensure proper documentation of all medication administration, including refusals, in the EHR.
- Medication Preparation and Inventory Management - Prepare daily medication carts, blister packs, and supplies needed for each med pass. Maintain accurate inventory of medications, including all stock medications, and ensure proper storage, labeling, and expiration-date monitoring. Communicate any medication shortages, discrepancies, or ordering needs to their supervisor. Assist with receiving, organizing, and securing medication deliveries.
- Medication Verification - Verify patient-provided medications upon intake by contacting the dispensing pharmacy to confirm prescription details, dosages, and active status within the last 30 days. Communicate any discrepancies, outdated prescriptions, or safety concerns to nursing leadership for follow-up.
- Multidisciplinary Team Communication - Work closely with custody staff to ensure efficient and safe medication administration. Communicate patient needs, behavioral concerns, or medication-related issues to supervisor.
- Other Duties - Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Must complete the assigned training program within 30 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with medication administration and pharmacy inventory management.
- Experience in a correctional setting.
