Medication History Technician
Job Summary
The position is under supervision of a licensed pharmacist and involves obtaining medication histories for patients being admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Department and other departments. This includes collecting information from the patient directly or from the patient's family, hospital records, retail pharmacies, or physician offices. The technician then enters the medication history into the electronic patient database, communicates its completion to physicians, nurses, and pharmacists, and performs duties typically handled by a Pharmacy Technician 2. Additional responsibilities include assisting with pharmacy projects, aseptic IV preparation, proper storage, distribution, packaging, and labeling of medications, record keeping, and monitoring/reconciling hospital vaccine and medication usage reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience:
Medication History Technician 1: Six (6) months experience as a BRH Pharmacy Technician 1 or the equivalent at a medical center, clinic, or hospital. One (1) year of retail experience in a Pharmacy that included documenting medication history or performing medication history research may substitute for the required experience. Alternatively, a Medication History Certificate may substitute for the required experience.
Medication History Technician 2: One (1) year of Medication History Technician experience at Bartlett Regional Hospital. Three (3) years of Pharmacy Technician experience that included medication history technician tasks may substitute for the required experience.
Licenses: Valid State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License
Certifications: Pharmacy Technician at time of appointment (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board). Medication History Certification at time of appointment (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board).
Pay Information
Internal Hires: Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based on applicable personnel rules or union contract terms.
External Hires: Step placement and rate of pay will be determined based on relevant experience.
Medication History Technician 1 starts at $22.45 per hour. Medication History Technician 2 starts at $26.56 per hour.
