About the role
This is a full-time position on rotating 8-hour shifts.
Responsibilities
- Obtain an accurate and complete admission medication list via a face-to-face interview with patients, including prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal products. Document drug name, dose, frequency, compliance, and last dose taken. Also obtain and document any known drug allergies and reactions.
- Collaborate with alternative information sources such as family, physician offices, nursing homes, or retail pharmacies when necessary.
- Communicate effectively and use advanced interviewing skills to conduct medication history interviews in a professional and non-invasive manner.
- Problem-solve and apply critical thinking skills to obtain admission medication lists for a wide variety of patient populations.
- Apply advanced computer skills to gather information and document the patient’s admission medication list.
- Know and adhere to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must be a registered pharmacy technician or be eligible for technician/trainee registration in the State of Iowa prior to the start of employment.
- National Pharmacy Technician Certification required within 6 months of employment.
- Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer—LIVE class only) prior to employment or within 60 days of hire, and maintain current status.
- Complete Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renew every 5 years.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two or more years of experience as a pharmacy technician (retail preferred) or allied health professional, with knowledge of medications including brand/generic names, available dosages, frequencies, and indications.
