About the role
Follow the policies and procedures of the facility governing the administering of medications to residents. Note and report errors in the administration of medications. Assist in developing and implementing procedures or programs to determine medication errors.
Responsibilities
- Note and report errors in the administration of medications.
- Avoid and prevent medication errors by verifying medications brought into the facility by newly admitted residents.
- Complete necessary forms, charts, reports, etc., and submit as required.
- Participate in Quality Assurance programs, the Pharmaceutical Services Committee, and other facility committees.
- Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document oral and topical medications.
- Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication.
- Accurately measure, record, and report vital signs of residents.
- Follow facility procedures for drug receipt errors, including documenting and reporting errors.
- Ensure proper labeling and documentation of medications.
- Document instances where prescribed medication is not administered.
- Promptly notify the appropriate personnel of any errors or reactions to medications.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
- Report any known or suspected unauthorized attempts to access facility’s information system.
- Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel to ensure adequate maintenance of nursing services.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
- Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information.
- Supervise other staff as needed.
Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent.
- Licensed Medication Aide with successful completion of a state-approved training program and any necessary examinations.
Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and employees.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
