Medication Access Technician - UVA Specialty Pharmacy (Hybrid)
About the role
These roles are responsible for the administration, preparation, dispensing, and management of medications and other health products to ensure safe and effective patient care. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians work in various settings, including pharmacies, UVA hospitals, clinics, and research facilities. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and management of medications and support pharmacy operations by filling prescriptions, maintaining medication inventory, and processing insurance claims to ensure smooth and efficient pharmacy operations under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Individual contributors in this role spend the majority of their time delivering support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are limited without additional education or significant training and experience. A specialty license or certification, acquired through training and/or experience, is required. This career stream is most commonly applied to patient care areas.
Responsibilities
- Assist pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and management of medications
- Fill prescriptions and maintain medication inventory
- Process insurance claims
- Ensure pharmacy operations run smoothly and efficiently under supervision
- Communicate information that requires explanation or interpretation
Requirements
- Basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and vocational or technical education
- Works under moderate supervision; problems are typically routine but may require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures
- Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills; attention to detail and ability to write legibly
- Job requires sitting for prolonged periods
Qualifications
- Education: High School Graduate or equivalent required
- Experience: 6 months minimum relevant experience required
- Licensure: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required
- CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required
Pay
The pay range for this role is $20.68 - $28.47 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
