About the role

Medically-fragile Special Education Assistants provide assistance to students with a variety of complex health conditions that impact engagement, participation, and performance across all learning environments in the inclusive school and community settings.

  • Wheelchair mobility and maneuvering, positioning, transferring and/or lifting with or without mechanical assistance
  • Feeding with or without adaptive assistance
  • Delegated medical procedures and medication administration
  • Bathrooming, diapering
  • Documentation and maintenance of daily procedure or treatment records
  • Assisting with the instructional program using adapted materials for students aged 3-21

Responsibilities

  • Work with a wide range of students with health, physical, emotional, intellectual, and/or behavioral disabilities
  • Support needs including g-tube or oral feedings, diapering, bathroom assistance, mobility training, adaptive equipment use, positioning, wheelchair/ambulation assistance, and other prescribed medical procedures
  • Under the direction of the teacher, provide instructional support in specialized and inclusive learning environments and at community-based sites
  • Assist students individually and in small groups with specialized programming
  • Monitor and support student behavior consistent with strategies outlined in the behavioral education plan (BEP)
  • Support social skills development and apply restorative practices in conflict resolution
  • Provide physical assistance in transporting students between classrooms and other learning environments
  • Assist with loading and unloading students from vehicles and support students on school-related outings
  • Help with students’ adaptive/self-care needs throughout the day
  • Maintain health records and follow established health plans, including daily charting and data collection (e.g., seizure activity)
  • Perform other duties as assigned when the student is not in attendance (e.g., supervise lunchrooms, recess, playground, and hallways)

Requirements

  • Desire to work with students who have complex health needs
  • Experience working with children
  • AHA BLS CPR/AED for HCP Certification (required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire and maintained annually)
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence
  • High school diploma
  • Completion of the MMSD Medically Fragile SEA Training
  • One of the following:
    • Associate’s Degree
    • 48 academic credits beyond high school
    • Pass an onsite assessment in lieu of college credits
  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Special Education Program Aide License (1015) (must obtain within a timeframe determined by the District if not already held)

Skills

  • Strong communication skills to relay changing health status of students
  • Ability to implement prescribed health plans and recommendations from occupational/physical therapists
  • Consistent adherence to hygiene practices as outlined in MMSD Health Policies and student care plans
  • Ability to monitor and respond to student behavior per the behavior education plan (BEP)
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Effective communication with non-verbal or unintelligible students, culturally-diverse students, health services staff, and community partners
  • Ability to push and control a student’s manual wheelchair
  • Physical ability to walk, lift (up to 50 lbs.), climb stairs, bend, reach, extend, and kneel
  • Commitment to MMSD’s equity vision, anti-racism knowledge, and practice improvement

Pay

Starting compensation: $25.47 hourly wage (26-27 Salary Schedule).

Schedule

Non-Exempt. Work may require travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings. Position may require working evenings, nights, and some weekends. School-based positions are required to be in-person unless otherwise directed by the building principal.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work under generally safe conditions with minimal risk of injury
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Involves walking, sitting, stooping, or reaching
  • Manual dexterity for operating office equipment
  • May require being stationary for extended periods
  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor environments, including inclement weather, non-air-conditioned spaces, and areas with fluctuating temperatures

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish and English
