About the role
The Medical Laboratory Technician position at UofL Health performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing blood and various other body fluids to support the physician's diagnosis and treatment of the patient. This role complies with standards and accrediting bodies including AABB, CAP, CLIA, FDA, and Joint Commission.
Responsibilities
- Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, acceptability, processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results according to departmental SOPs
- Analyzes patient samples according to approved standards of testing
- Reports STATS or critical results to providers according to departmental procedures
- Maintain and monitor instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications
- Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and all maintenance performed
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
- Follow accrediting agency standards such as CAP, AABB, FDA, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and safety guidelines as described in their respective guidelines
- Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment
- Participate in all applicable safety training sessions
- Know the location and contents of the safety manual
- Know the location/use of all applicable safety equipment
- Successfully completes department specific competencies
Shift Requirements
- Shift Length (in hours): 8 hours or 10 hours or 12 hours

Education & Experience
- Appropriate Associate’s degree to meet CLIA certification standards for Medical Laboratory Technician
- Minimum one (1) year of lab experience (preferred)
- Certification: Medical Technologist certification (required) MLT(ASCP) MLT(AMT) Qualified as a medical laboratory technician under CLIA rules, or equivalent
- Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The AAB Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)

- Knowledge of College of American Pathology (CAP)
Language Ability
Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats
Reasoning Ability
Able to critically think through complex situations and process improvements
Computer Skills
- Basic computer skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Cerner EHR
