About the Role

Under the direction of the Manager, Administrative Director, and Medical Director, the lead medical technologist performs clinical testing in one or more of the following areas: blood bank, chemistry, serology, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, special chemistry, microbiology, and manual tests. The lead technologist obtains or receives specimens, performs laboratory tests according to written procedures, understands methods and principles, performs and evaluates quality control daily, and reports issues to the Administrative Director or Manager.

The role includes performing preventative maintenance on laboratory instrumentation, interpreting results for accuracy and critical limits, organizing work to meet deadlines, and recording all data obtained. The lead technologist collaborates with nursing and hospital staff to ensure timely patient care, meets regulatory requirements, and assumes overall laboratory supervision in the absence of management. Additional responsibilities include coordinating instruction and documentation for new employees and students, performing competency testing, and contributing to employee evaluations.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university and successful score on a national certification exam approved by the State Board, or
• Completion of three years of academic study (minimum 90 semester hours) at an accredited college or university in biological or physical science, and at least 12 months of training at a school of medical technology approved by a national accrediting agency, and passing a national certification exam approved by the State Board, or
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological sciences from an accredited college or university, and at least one year of full-time experience or training in the specialty or subspecialty in which tests are performed, and passing a national certification exam approved by the State Board.
• Current State license or provisional license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist General Supervisor (required when working alone).
• Five years of experience as a medical technologist in a large clinical laboratory.
• Generalist experience in all areas of the laboratory is preferred.
