About the Role

Performs at an advanced level in various routine or special chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic laboratory tests. Duties may be specific to a particular area of the laboratory, such as chemistry, hematology, and microbiology. The Medical Technologist Sr. may also assist in the supervision and training of lower-level Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities

  • Productivity
    • Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate on a variety of medical technology procedures, including but not limited to:
      • Performing tests on cells and microorganisms in body fluids
      • Examining growth patterns of bacteria and fungus in patient specimens and cultures
      • Analyzing blood and other body fluids
      • Performing blood compatibility testing
    • Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions, in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to the working environment.
    • Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.
    • Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of laboratory customers.
    • Maintains inventory of supplies in work areas to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services.
  • Quality
    • Ensures quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes, including specimen preparation, assaying, interpretation, and results reporting in compliance with established policies and procedures.
    • Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains accurate and complete records of daily activities.
    • Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within the policy and legal guidelines of the hospital and laboratory in decision-making processes and performance of procedures.
    • Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
    • Responsible for helping meet accrediting agency requirements for the department.
  • Customer Service
    • Consistently exhibits a professional manner, appearance, and performance in the approach to job-related duties to maintain high standards in the delivery of quality healthcare services.
    • When in contact with patients of different age ranges (e.g., pediatric, adolescent, geriatric), performs all patient care duties in a manner that demonstrates a humanistic attitude for the physical and psychological needs relevant to the age of the patient served.
  • Collaboration and Partnership
    • Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.
    • May schedule and assign work to staff members, monitor work quality and quantity, and ensure efficient departmental operations by providing supervisory support when needed.
    • May provide quality training and orientation for assigned employees, inform co-workers of relevant departmental policies and procedures, and allocate tasks to co-workers as needed.
    • Treats all co-workers with compassion, understanding, and respect, and strives to enhance co-worker performance through cooperative effort and action.
  • Other Duties
    • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Three years of clinical laboratory experience.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), Medical Technology (MT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Chemistry, or Biology from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure/Certification: Must be certified by ASCP, AMT, or equivalent certification and maintain certification. No license required in Mississippi.
