Medical Supply Tech (Sterile Processing)
About the role
This position is open to current permanent Department of Veteran Affairs employees, Federal employees in the competitive and excepted service, and all U.S. Citizens.
Responsibilities
- Receives contaminated critical and semi-critical RMD in the decontamination area.
- Disassembles the RMD and determines the correct cleaning method, such as ultrasonic cleaners, mechanical washers/disinfectors, cart washers, and chemical cleaning/decontamination agents, as determined by manufacturer instructions for use (IFUs).
- Inspects, assembles, and determines the correct method and packaging for sterilization such as steam, Steris, and high-level disinfecting scope reprocessor.
- Performs and documents daily operational checks and records for all sterilization equipment.
- Prepares, loads, and operates sterilizers and scope reprocessor.
- Prepares OR case carts daily using surgery schedule.
- Provides decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and distribution support of critical and semi-critical RMD for the Medical Center.
Requirements
The MST will have extensive knowledge of the processes for RMD as required by this position. The MST will be required to learn and maintain current knowledge of the standard operating procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, preparation, and sterilization of RMD appropriate to this position. The MST will demonstrate their ability to follow the directions of a written procedure in the processing of RME appropriate to this position.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR,
- Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR,
- Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
- May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
