About the role

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is Louisiana’s leading cancer care organization, caring for more patients each year than any other facility in the region. With strategic hospital and physician partnerships, we deliver on our mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer. We are looking for talented and highly‑motivated individuals who demonstrate a natural desire to support the meaningful work of community oncologists and the patients we serve. As a medical scribe, you will be at the center of the patient‑doctor encounter, learning medical terms, coding and transcribing medical notes. You will act as a personal assistant to the physician, performing documentation in the EHR, gathering information for the patient's visit, and partnering with the physician to deliver efficient patient care. On‑the‑job training will be provided, giving you real‑world exposure to healthcare and strengthening professional school applications.

Responsibilities

• Transcribes and quality checks medical dictation to provide a permanent record of patient care.
• Meets quality and productivity standards and deadlines as established by employer.
• Operates software and equipment as directed to complete assignments.
• Follows policies and procedures to contribute to the efficiency of the medical transcription.
• Interacts with co‑workers and physicians.
• Uses interpersonal skills effectively to build and maintain cooperative working relationships.

• Quick learner.

Qualifications

• Must be on a pre‑MED or pre‑PA track.
• Must be within 4‑6 weeks of graduating college or in your gap year/years between med/pa school.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, vital signs and symptoms, medications, diagnostic tests, laboratory values.
• Knowledge of medical transcription guidelines and practices.
• Excellent skills in English usage, grammar, punctuation, and style.
• Ability to understand diverse accents and dialects, and varying dictation styles.
• Ability to operate designated word processing, dictation, and transcription equipment and other equipment as specified.
• Excellent listening skills.
• Excellent eye, hand, and auditory coordination.
• Must type a minimum of 65 wpm.
