Medical Physicist Co-op/Student II
About the role
The Proton Co-Op Student (PCOS) works alongside the Medical Physicists and Physics Assistants in support of the proton therapy center at Cincinnati Children’s, one of only about 45 such centers in the country. Proton therapy delivers tumor-destroying doses of radiation while sparing more healthy tissue than conventional radiation, reducing side effects and minimizing the risk of secondary cancer. The PCOS primarily engages in:
- Quality Management Program tasks under the Medical Physics group.
- Clinical or development projects aimed at improving the efficiency or efficacy of the proton therapy center.
- Identifying operational improvement opportunities and proposing or implementing solutions, in collaboration with Medical Physics and Therapy staff.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the collection of quality assurance and beam data, including machine and patient quality assurance data, translational research beam data, and other measurement-driven projects.
- Participate in development and operational improvement projects, focusing on enhancing clinical and technical practices or improving quality and efficiency.
- Provide accurate record keeping, data analysis, and documentation.
- Present findings and progress to Medical Physicists and Physics Assistants.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a degree-granting college program.
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s in Engineering or a STEM-related field (preferred).
Skills
- Motivated work ethic with a detail-oriented and systematic approach.
- Exemplary documentation and communication skills.
- Strong or advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
- Hands-on skills, such as setting up, using, and tearing down equipment, with preference given to experience with detectors, particularly radiation detectors.
- Experience with computer languages, such as MATLAB or Python (considered a plus).
Schedule
- Full-time, temporary (fixed term) position.
- Rotating shift.
- 40 hours per week.
