About the Role
The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) performs pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of laboratory testing procedures, ranging from waived to moderate and high complexity testing. The MLS recognizes appropriate and inappropriate selection of lab tests and correlates lab results to patients' clinical conditions. They possess scientific knowledge to evaluate quality control, instrument, and result data.
Responsibilities
- Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing according to laboratory procedures, encompassing pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases.
- Performs quality control and quality assurance activities, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Processes specimens and performs computer data entry and retrieval, including accessioning specimens, entering results, and retrieving information.
- Resolves problems and answers technical questions, serving as a frontline resource to the laboratory’s customers.
- Assists in the review and updating of laboratory procedure manuals.
- Participates in or leads Performance Improvement activities.
- Oversees test method evaluations, validations, and implementation.
- May oversee lab assistants and non-registered techs to ensure appropriate pre-analytic specimen preparation and moderate or waived testing performance.
- Oversees and teaches students and employees.
- Monitors supplies, ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements related to safety and laboratory testing, and maintains workplace cleanliness.
- Provides face-to-face and telephone customer service.
Requirements
- Minimum one (1) year of recent clinical laboratory experience as an MLS or recent graduation from an MLS/CLS (Clinical Lab Scientist) Program.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Must obtain one of the following certifications within 6 months of hire:
- Medical Lab Scientist Certificate,
- ASCP International Medical Lab Scientist Certificate,
- Clinical Lab Scientist Certificate, or
- Medical Technologist Certificate.
- Basic Life Support certification within 3 months of hire.
- Experience to meet national certification exam requirements at the MLS level or meets qualifications in CLIA 493.1491.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Customer service and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two (2) years of generalist experience as an MLS/MT.
- Certified as MLS/MT by date of hire/transfer.
- Successful completion of an accredited MLS/MT Program.
Schedule
- Part-time, 30 scheduled weekly hours.
- Shift: Evening (02:00 PM – 11:30 PM).
- Workdays: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
Pay
$37.81 - $61.03 per hour.
