Medical Laboratory Scientist-Microbiology (Part-Time)

About the role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory tests on patient specimens and provides information for the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases. Maintains records of performance and utilizes independent judgment to generate acceptable test results within quality control standards. May participate in research and development activities, act as a key resource person for staff inside and outside of the department, and instruct students, laboratory, and non-laboratory staff on laboratory procedures and techniques.

Performs all tasks according to standard operating procedures. May work on the development and modification of procedures and assumes additional responsibilities as outlined by management or the laboratory director.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tests on patient specimens for diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases.
• Maintain records of performance and ensure test results meet quality control standards.
• Participate in research and development activities.
• Act as a key resource person for staff inside and outside the department.
• Instruct students, laboratory, and non-laboratory staff on laboratory procedures and techniques.
• Follow standard operating procedures and assist in the development or modification of procedures.
• Perform routine maintenance on specialized testing equipment.
• Maintain quality control and other records.
• Use computers to enter and retrieve test results.
• Adhere to all laboratory safety regulations and protocols.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences.
• One (1) year of relevant experience.
• Certification or eligibility for board certification by ASCP, AMT, NCA, or equivalent. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment; failure to achieve may result in position downgrade or loss of employment.
• Knowledge of complex and lengthy laboratory techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of specialized testing equipment and routine maintenance procedures.
• Ability to maintain quality control and other records.
• Proficiency in using computers to enter and retrieve test results.
• Analytical skills to make quantitative and qualitative observations.
• Ability to work independently, handle constant interruptions, and manage concurrent tasks.
• Knowledge of all laboratory safety regulations and protocols.
