Medical Laboratory Scientist Microbiology

About the role

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs laboratory tests on patient specimens and provides information for the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases. Maintains records of performance and utilizes independent judgment to generate acceptable test results within quality control standards. May participate in research and development activities and act as a key resource person for staff inside and outside of the department. Instructs students, laboratory, and non-laboratory staff on laboratory procedures and techniques.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tests on patient specimens to aid in diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of diseases.
• Maintain records of performance and ensure test results meet quality control standards.
• Participate in research and development activities as needed.
• Act as a resource for laboratory and non-laboratory staff.
• Instruct students and staff on laboratory procedures and techniques.
• Follow standard operating procedures and perform tasks accordingly.
• Assist in the development and modification of laboratory procedures.
• Assume additional responsibilities as outlined by management or the laboratory director.
• Perform routine maintenance on specialized testing equipment.
• Maintain quality control and other records.
• Use computers to enter and retrieve test results.
• Adhere to all laboratory safety regulations and protocols.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related sciences.
• One (1) year of relevant experience.
• Certification or eligibility for board certification by ASCP, AMT, NCA, or equivalent certification. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment.
• Knowledge of complex and lengthy laboratory techniques and procedures.
• Knowledge of specialized testing equipment and routine maintenance procedures.
• Ability to maintain quality control and other records.
• Proficiency in using computers to enter and retrieve test results.
• Analytical skills to make quantitative and qualitative observations.
• Ability to work independently, handle interruptions, and manage concurrent tasks.
