Medical Laboratory Scientist II, Peabody, 40 Hours, Dayshift

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, you will independently perform a variety of clinical assays and associated supporting work for use in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role functions as a generalist across multiple laboratory disciplines, including Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Andrology, and Microbiology. Coverage includes rotating weekends and holidays, and phlebotomy is required.

Responsibilities

• Verify sample identification, acceptability, and appropriateness of orders according to written procedures.
• Handle specimens according to written procedures and perform follow-up on rejected samples per protocol.
• Prioritize work to complete assignments efficiently within established turnaround times.
• Recognize and evaluate unusual or unreasonable results; consult with management or appropriate personnel about abnormal findings.
• Record laboratory results (observations, interpretations, calculations) on worksheets, verify computer entry, and report STAT and critical values per protocol.
• Perform and document required quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures; interpret results to identify out-of-control situations and notify management.
• Conduct surveys by testing, recording, and reporting results accurately.
• Perform scheduled maintenance and documentation on instruments and equipment; escalate unresolved issues to management.
• Assist in training new employees and Medical Laboratory Science students.
• Contribute to department goals of resource optimization and revenue enhancement; maintain appropriate inventory.
• Comply with all organizational and departmental policies, safety procedures, and behavioral expectations.
• Participate in mandatory education, competency assessments, and quality improvement activities.
• Demonstrate commitment to customer service standards and continuing education (6 hrs/year).
• Perform all other duties as needed or directed to meet departmental needs.

Requirements

• Baccalaureate degree including a laboratory internship at an institution certified by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
• Eligible for certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), National Certification Agency (NCA), or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Certification must be obtained within 12 months of hire or promotion.
• Laboratory internship or related experience necessary to qualify for certification exam.

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of clinical tests and standards to perform complex tests and accurately report results.
• Analytic ability to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, and troubleshoot issues.
• Ability to identify and resolve clinical testing problems, implement corrective actions, and modify procedures as needed.
• Capacity to concentrate for long periods, work accurately under pressure, and meet deadlines.
• Manual dexterity and acuity for specimen preparation, solution preparation, screening, and operating instrumentation/computers.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written English skills to exchange information with physicians and colleagues.
• Proficiency in personal computers and related software applications.

Pay

The base hourly pay range for this position is $38.52 - $51.84. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, geography, job responsibilities, and applicable shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, or overtime.
