About the role

Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility in specialties qualified by education, training and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments/procedures in the department.
  • Support the department in quality control, troubleshooting, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects.
  • Report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with SOPs ensuring quality control requirements are met.
  • Support and comply with laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record keeping.
  • Ensure reagents/test kits have received, expired, and opened dates, perform and document QC analysis, make quality control decisions, and inform supervisory personnel of problems.
  • Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized reports to physicians.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
  • Adhere to established CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work practice controls as directed by management.
  • Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel.
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections.

Requirements

  • One (1) year full-time experience or training in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with most current year in present department.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and use of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments.
  • Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  • BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology, or Associates degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology.
  • ASCP Certification (Preferred).
  • MLS, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Lab Scientist, Med Tech, Medical Technologist, CLS, Clinical Lab Scientist.

  • Proven leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Detail-oriented, able to work independently, establish work priorities, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Interpersonal skills to deal courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and clients.
  • Communication skills to handle telephone inquiries from clients and deal with client information confidentially.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems.
