About the role

The Chemistry Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides comprehensive clinical laboratory testing that supports the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring of patients with cancer and other complex medical conditions. Utilizing advanced analytical instrumentation and state-of-the-art technology, the laboratory delivers accurate, timely, and high-quality test results that enable physicians and care teams to make informed clinical decisions. As an integral part of one of the nation’s leading cancer centers, the Chemistry Laboratory is committed to excellence, innovation, and continuous quality improvement.

Responsibilities

• Perform clinical chemistry testing while ensuring compliance with established laboratory policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
• Analyze patient specimens and evaluate and verify test results.
• Monitor quality control data and troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
• Manage laboratory inventory and accurately document testing information within laboratory information systems.
• Participate in process improvement initiatives, validate new methodologies, laboratory information system updates, and testing platforms, and help optimize laboratory workflows and operational efficiency.
• Support the education and development of students, new employees, and fellows through training and mentoring.
• Collaborate with pathologists, physicians, nurses, and fellow laboratory professionals to provide responsive service, resolve laboratory-related questions, and ensure efficient turnaround times in a fast-paced clinical environment.

• Technical skills: Remain knowledgeable and competent for all policies, procedures and protocols; properly acquire specimen data into the computer system(s); troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment; maintain competency in computer functions in assigned areas; follow section’s inventory control system to assure effective use of supplies and reagents; analyze and evaluate patient results correctly and appropriately; comply with safety guidelines and procedures and adhere to regulatory mandates; store patient information and results to allow easy future access as required; enhance productivity and laboratory functions by demonstrating dependability; adjust, prioritize, and organize work to achieve maximum productivity to meet the workload demands of the section; assist peers and supervisors with tasks after completion of assigned work; adhere to attendance policy, begin work as scheduled; work independently, utilize resources available to maximize efficiency; assist in the development of laboratory personnel and tests to enhance laboratory functions; actively participate in training students, employees and fellows; participate in process improvement projects; validate and evaluate new methodologies and tests with the help of Laboratory Supervisor and technical support; validate database for new software or new tests implemented in the laboratory; coach and mentor students and employees.
• Customer service: Manage all customer service interactions with diplomacy, actively facilitating resolutions to problems and addressing the needs of clients both internal and external.
• Computer skills: Maintain proficiency on computer functions in the lab processes; properly acquire specimen data into computer system(s); analyze and evaluate patient results correctly and appropriately; store patient information and results to allow easy future access as required.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology OR Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology OR Successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program.
• Required Experience:
  • 2 years of clinical laboratory experience with an Associate’s Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience with a Bachelor’s Degree in a related science field.
  • No experience required with completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology accredited program.

Qualifications

• ASCP – American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification OR CHS – Certified Histocompatibility Specialist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technologist, American College of Histocompatibility & Immunogenetics (ACHI) OR MDT – Molecular Diagnostics Tech, American Medical Technologists.
