About the role
As Testing Personnel defined by CLIA, the Medical Laboratory Scientist I is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting waived and non-waived test results. Under general supervision, performs only those tests authorized by the laboratory manager, requiring skills commensurate with education, training, or experience.
Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Adhere to quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
- Follow established corrective action policies when test systems deviate from acceptable performance levels.
- Identify problems affecting test performance or reporting, correct issues or notify supervisors immediately, and document all corrective actions.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, or Laboratory Sciences (required; experience cannot substitute).
- 1–2 years of laboratory experience.
- ASCP Certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification) strongly preferred.
- Basic understanding of laboratory equipment operation, maintenance, repair, and analytic techniques.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment with careful attention to detail and adherence to written protocols.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to interact professionally with staff, physicians, hospital personnel, and patients.
Schedule
- 24-hour day shift position.
- Rotating every 3rd weekend and holiday required.
