Medical Laboratory Scientist

Part-time, night shift (10:45 PM - 7:15 AM), rotating 3 days one week and 2 days the next, every 3rd weekend when fully staffed, 2-3 holidays per year. $5,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year commitment.

About the role

Performing over 300,000 tests per year, the Micro lab at THAA is one of the largest in the state of Michigan. This is a state-of-the-art microbiology lab where you will utilize your experience and skills while learning and growing within this unique field. Located in Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Ann Arbor, you will be centrally located to the art, culture, academics, entertainment, and activities that Ann Arbor provides.

Under general supervision, performs qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests on patient specimens according to established standards and practices. Analyzes test results and prepares samples for testing. Is knowledgeable of the principles and clinical significance involved in test procedures and uses this expertise daily. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.

Responsibilities

• Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests pertinent to the assigned section.
• Records and/or enters test results into the laboratory computer; advises supervisor of spurious, unusual, or highly abnormal results before release.
• Reports stat test results and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner according to established policies.
• Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention to unusual fluctuations.
• Performs required quality control, equipment maintenance, and calibration; operates laboratory equipment used in testing.
• Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations.
• Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing.
• Contacts nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and for clarification of requests.
• Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships; approaches conflict constructively.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information.
• Performs job duties safely and reports hazards immediately to management.
• Provides quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs.
• Demonstrates unit/area competencies and adheres to the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph Mercy Health System.

Requirements

• Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or related science.
• MT/MLS or MLT certification (ASCP or NCLS) preferred.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
