Medical Laboratory Scientist
Part-time, night shift position: 10:45 PM - 7:15 AM, alternating 3 days one week and 2 days the next. Includes every 3rd weekend when fully staffed and 2-3 holidays per year. $5,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year commitment.
About the role
The Micro lab at THAA performs over 300,000 tests per year and is one of the largest in the state of Michigan. This state-of-the-art microbiology lab offers opportunities to utilize your experience and skills while learning and growing within the field. Located in Saint Joseph Mercy Health System Ann Arbor, you will be centrally located near art, culture, academics, entertainment, and activities.
Under general supervision, you will perform qualitative and quantitative laboratory tests on patient specimens according to established standards and practices. You will analyze test results, prepare samples for testing, and demonstrate expertise in the principles and clinical significance of test procedures.
Responsibilities
- Follow established procedures and policies to perform all tests pertinent to the assigned section.
- Record and/or enter test results into the laboratory computer; advise supervisor of spurious, unusual, or highly abnormal results before release.
- Report stat test results and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner according to established policies.
- Compare test results with previous patient test results when indicated; highlight unusual fluctuations to supervisor or pathologist.
- Perform required quality control, equipment maintenance, and calibration; operate laboratory equipment used in testing.
- Notify appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control issues.
- Prepare standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing.
- Contact nursing unit or client office personnel regarding results and for clarification of requests or routine problems.
- Maintain good rapport and cooperative relationships; approach conflict constructively and help identify and resolve problems.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information.
- Perform job duties safely, report hazards, and ensure personal and coworker safety.
- Provide quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs through competent clinical practice.

Requirements
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or a related science, or equivalent work/education/experience.
- Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification (ASCP or NCLS) preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
