Supervision
Captures workflow of phlebotomists in Specimen Processing area.
Affirms accurate and efficient transportation of lab-related supplies, equipment and specimens.
Fulfills regulatory guidelines in handling/processing of laboratory specimens.
Accurately identifies and labels all specimens according to proper policy.
Communicates effectively with all NMHS staff, patients, their family members and customers.
Utilizes AIDET as applicable.
Completes CARES training.
Ensures proper service recovery for patients and/or caregivers.
Answers telephones politely and efficiently.
Collaborates with Pathology and NMHS employees as part of a team.
Ensures accurate and timely reporting of department testing.
Maintains performance improvement goals for the department.
Documents monthly maintenance and quality control of instruments appropriately.
Trains students and new employees.
Engages in continuing education to expand skills.
Keeps abreast of regulatory changes.
Qualifications
- Adheres to NMHS/NMMC Policies/Procedures/Guidelines
- Complies with appropriate Local/State/Federal policies/procedures/guidelines/regulations/laws/statutes
- Adheres to College of American Pathologist (CAP) & Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards
Skills
- Associate of Arts degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician from a CAHEA/NAACLS accredited program
- ASCP Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician, preferred within 12 months after graduating from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician Program
- Willingness to consider 10 years of experience in a clinic or hospital laboratory in lieu of certification
- If ASCP certification has recently lapsed, completes continuing education and recertification requirements within 90 days
- If the credential has lapsed >10 years, retakes the certification exam
- MLTs credentialed prior to 2006 are grandfathered and do not need to complete the continuing education requirement
- Medical Laboratory Scientist students in their fourth year of study who have successfully completed a clinical rotation may be hired into PRN MLT positions
