About the role
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs waived, highly and moderately complex testing as per CLIA regulations. Responsibilities include adhering to laboratory procedures, maintaining equipment, reviewing results, and assisting in policy development.
Responsibilities
- Adhere to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient test results.
- Follow established quality control policies and document corrective actions for deviations.
- Identify and address issues affecting test performance.
- Perform waived or complex laboratory procedures manually and using automated methods in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology.
- Maintain and calibrate instruments and equipment daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
- Review and verify the accuracy of patient results before release.
- Recognize and adjust to age-specific variations in test results.
- Ensure proficiency testing samples are analyzed similarly to patient samples and collaborate only after reporting results to relevant authorities.
- Assist with venipuncture or capillary puncture on newborns to geriatrics.
- Aid in developing and maintaining laboratory policies and procedures.
- Comply with department and hospital safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources policies.
- In the absence of a supervisor, assume leadership responsibilities during shifts.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.
Requirements
- Current and valid state license if the laboratory is in a state requiring one.
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
- Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or completion of an MLT program.
- One year of hospital laboratory work experience preferred.
Qualifications
- Must possess skills commensurate with education, training, or experience.
- Ability to identify and correct problems affecting test performance.
- Knowledge of age-specific test results and proficiency testing procedures.
- Experience with venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
- Strong adherence to department and hospital policies and procedures.

Pay
The exact starting compensation will be determined at the time of selection, based on a range of factors including skillset, experience, education, credentials, and licensure. A reasonable compensation estimate for this role is $25.54 to $25.54 per hour.
