Medical Lab Scientist Regional Float

PeaceHealth is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist Regional Float for a full-time, 1.00 FTE, variable position. The salary range is $43.69 - $65.52 per hour, with the hiring rate dependent on education, training, work experience, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and seniority.

This position will float among the following lab locations: Cottage Grove, Riverbend Annex, Peace Harbor in Florence, and Southwest in Vancouver. The home location will be Eugene/Springfield or Cottage Grove.

About the Role

This position requires badging in/out according to procedure and accurate timecard management, including documentation of start/stop times, breaks, and lunches. Transportation is required for each scheduled workday, with routine travel within a 30-mile, one-way radius of the home base. Travel beyond 30 miles may qualify for mileage reimbursement, lodging accommodations, and meals, depending on assignment length and distance. Parking permits will be provided if needed. Initial training will occur at the laboratory nearest the caregiver’s home base and will be documented per policy.

The Float Pool Manager will ensure all training and competency documents are completed and available during inspections. Float pool caregivers must adhere to all PeaceHealth laboratory policies and any site-specific procedures, including facility-specific dress codes.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate specimens for testing, applying appropriate criteria and performance standards.
• Perform waived, moderate, and high-complexity laboratory tests in areas such as blood bank, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology.
• Monitor, screen, and troubleshoot devices, tests, and procedures, recognizing anomalies and making corrections to ensure quality.
• Maintain equipment and tools, perform quality assurance testing, routine calibration, and ensure optimal performance.
• Assist Technical Specialists or Supervisors with evaluations of new methods and procedures.
• Consult with clinicians, supervisors, and other caregivers on test results, requirements, and testing protocols.
• Provide direction and guidance to phlebotomy and specimen management teams; assist with orientation of new caregivers and students.
• Assess competencies for moderate and high-complexity testing (with at least 4 years of experience for moderate complexity and 1 year for high complexity).
• Maintain appropriate records for specimens, tests, and data; utilize computer systems for reporting and documentation.
• Participate in department in-services, continuing education programs, competency assessments, and proficiency testing activities.
• Support compliance with regulations such as CAP and HIPAA.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biological Science, or an equivalent related science, plus completion of an accredited laboratory training program (program must be accredited by a regional or national accreditation agency).
• Preferred: 2 years of clinical experience performing high-complexity testing in a clinical laboratory department.
• Preferred upon hire: Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by ASCP, AMT, AAB, or equivalent (for non-U.S. citizens, accepted certifications include ASCP, AMT, or CSMLS).
