Medical Lab Scientist/Medical Technologist

About the role

Performs a variety of laboratory procedures under supervision, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Exercises professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload efficiently. Performs duties defined under CLIA roles of Technical Consultant, Technical Supervisor, and General Supervisor if delegated.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in one of the required areas of study (Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science). If the degree does not list the area of study, transcripts must be submitted for equivalency evaluation. Acceptable transcripts must include:
  • Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either:
    • 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR
    • 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
  • Completion of one (1) year in an approved program or equivalent with an accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, Summa Lab Tech 1 training program, etc.).
• Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), or Categorical certification in area of experience from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). Recent graduates from an accredited program with registry eligibility must obtain certification within 15 months of hire/promotion.
• Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory procedures, protocols, and instructions.
• Proficiency or ability to acquire skills to operate application packages used by the department.
• Minimum of 12 continuing education credits required each calendar year for continued employment.

Skills

• Manual dexterity sufficient to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, identify, and correct technical problems.
• Ability to work under stress and communicate test results to physicians, nursing units, and other authorized personnel professionally.
• Accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with expectations defined in the employee handbook, HR, and departmental policies.
• Ability to effectively interact with diverse patient/customer populations with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
• Annual successful completion of all regulatory-required testing related competencies.

Physical Demands

Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.

Pay

$33.41/hr - $40.10/hr. The salary range is base salary exclusive of any bonuses or differentials. Many factors, such as years of relevant experience and geographical location, are considered when determining the starting rate of pay.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week, 2nd shift.
