About the role
Novant Health is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist I (MLS) for its newly established Bluffton Free Standing Emergency Department. Located in South Carolina's Lowcountry, Bluffton offers a blend of coastal living, historic charm, and modern growth.
Responsibilities
- Perform waived, moderate, and highly complex laboratory testing on blood and body fluid specimens while ensuring accuracy, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
- Maintain accurate documentation and prepare timely test reports.
- Collaborate with physicians, providers, and healthcare team members to support high-quality patient care.
- Participate in inventory management, process improvement initiatives, and implementation of new laboratory procedures.
- Adhere to all safety, compliance, and accreditation standards, maintaining continuous survey readiness.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, service excellence, innovation, inclusion, and patient-centered care consistent with organizational values.
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or GED, required. 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, required. Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent. Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Technology or MT program preferred. If graduated before 1987, two-year certification is recognized as MT.
- Experience: One year experience as laboratory scientist for specialty areas (BB, Flow, and Micro). (Clinical internships of 12 months duration meet this requirement), preferred.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration: Scientist Cert from ASCP or AMT (BB, C, H, MT/MLS, M, MB), required.
Qualifications
- New graduates must obtain certification within 12-months of hire. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment.
- All individuals who are newly certified ASCP beginning January 1, 2004, must participate and maintain ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) through the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP).
- All individuals who are newly certified AMT beginning January 1, 2006, must participate and maintain AMT Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
Skills Required
- Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation.
- Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests.
- Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
- Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, hospital staff and the public.
- Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field.
- Ability to follow written protocols.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
