Medical Lab Scientist - Central Automated Lab - First Shift

Duke University Health System Clinical Laboratories is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist to join our state-of-the-art Duke Health laboratories. Our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to serving the rare and complex testing needs of Duke Health patients by providing timely and accurate results, educating the next generation of laboratorians, scientists and physicians, and researching and developing cutting-edge diagnostics.

About the role

This position is in the Central Automated Lab at Duke University Hospital, with a schedule of Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., and rotating weekends. ASCP certification is strongly preferred, and this position is eligible for a $5,000 commitment bonus.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
• Conduct laboratory tests using standard techniques and equipment, including specimen handling and processing.
• Operate manual or computerized instrumentation and perform basic troubleshooting of assay problems.
• Calibrate and maintain instrumentation according to standard operating procedures.
• Process patient samples using appropriate identification techniques to ensure quality material for testing.
• Communicate problems or issues to appropriate individuals and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Participate in the development of new medical laboratory tests and techniques, and assist in preparation for lab inspections.
• Review lab inspection documents and procedures to maintain compliance; bring non-compliance issues to upper-level staff.
• Perform proficiency testing as directed to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies.
• Document quality control and quality assurance results; notify personnel of instrument malfunctions or unusual results.
• Review and update written procedures and policies; comply with all safety procedures and report safety incidents within 24 hours.
• Attend laboratory meetings, safety, and compliance training as required; comply with competency testing and training programs.
• May provide technical guidance and instruction to students, interns, residents, staff, and other employees.
• Use behaviors that support balanced scorecard targets and Duke University Health System values.
• Cooperate and communicate effectively with co-workers to ensure effective workflow.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology required.
• Minimum educational or experience requirements may be modified at the discretion of the CLIA director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.

Qualifications

• ASCP certification strongly preferred.
