Medical Lab Scientist

Nature and Scope

The Lab is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation, providing laboratory services to an inpatient and outpatient population of all ages. The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality and timely laboratory tests for inpatients and outpatients. Test results must be clearly reported to nursing and/or medical staff through direct communication or result entry by computer.

• Communicating delays in patients care and assisting with technical questions for clinical lab assistants, physicians and nurses is expected.
• The incumbent must consider the age of the patient when performing testing and releasing results.
• Must be able to communicate with a diverse patient population and their family when performing special procedures.

Behavior

Behavior promoting positive customer service is expected at all times. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of and observe all safety requirements in a laboratory and hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English.
• Appropriate education to obtain and maintain Clinical Laboratory Technologist State of Nevada based on licensure criteria.
• Recent general clinical laboratory experience is preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Nevada Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Specialist, Provisional Clinical Lab Technologist, or Provisional Specialist license within 7 months from date of hire is required.
• General Supervisor licensure is also acceptable and will supersede the Clinical Laboratory Technologist or Specialist licensure in an assigned discipline.
• Certification(s): Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) preferred.

Computer / Typing

Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
