General Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist at Phelps Health understands the principles of clinical testing and performs tests in various areas including hematology, immunology, microbiology, clinical microscopy, chemistry, immunology, coagulation, and blood banking. They must adhere to accrediting agency regulations, interpret results accurately, and perform esoteric testing as needed.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Accurately performs routine testing without assistance and solves testing and analyzer problems.
  • Reviews and documents quality control failures and takes corrective actions.
  • Prioritizes workload and ensures priority of testing requests are met.
  • Manages workload, volunteers for additional work, and maintains a good balance between workload and productivity goals.
  • Communicates remaining pending work and relevant information to the next shift.
  • Ensures critical results are called to providers and documented correctly.
  • Affords training to new employees and assists in updating procedure manuals and policies.
  • Performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical assessments and troubleshoots specimen issues.

Education

A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or a related science is required. Non-registered candidates need at least one year of clinical laboratory experience.

Certification/License

MT, MLS, M, C, H, or BB certification is preferred for registered medical lab scientists. They must meet CMS requirements as a technical supervisor.

Mental/Physical Requirements

Close mental and visual attention is required for sustained periods of time. Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals and infectious materials is common. The position involves lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs. and constant exposure to air conditioning with moderate noise levels. It may require working any time of day.
