Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology) GS-0649-07
This position is located at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, VA. Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth is the oldest continuously running hospital in the Navy. Responsibilities
- Assists the Gastroenterologist and/or GI Surgeon in various clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and/or emergency procedures.
- Assists with endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies.
- Provides patients with an initial preparation checklist and explains procedures to minimize fears and ensure cooperation.
- Selects, sets up, adjusts, and operates equipment for designated procedures.
- Moves mobile procedure carts, equipment carts, and portable monitors to the ED, ICU, or OR.
- Prepares equipment for operation and assists the gastroenterology physician during procedures.
- Positions and drapes patients in accordance with clinic standard operating procedures.
- Operates the automatic endoscope reprocessing system to disinfect equipment.
- Disinfects equipment to prevent patient infection and cross-contamination by disassembling scopes, brushing parts, and using cleaning solutions.
- Prepares reports on examinations, equipment and utilization, workload, supply status, consumption, and related matters.
- Maintains inventory according to standards.
- Sets up equipment, checks instruments for completeness and proper functioning prior to procedures, and troubleshoots equipment as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
To qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. If qualifying based on education, transcripts will be required as part of your application.
- GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:
- Assisting in gastroenterology procedures;
- Preparing patients for gastroenterology procedures;
- Setting up equipment and/or instruments for designated procedures.
- OR Education: One full year of graduate-level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Gastroenterology.
- OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute:
- Divide total months of experience by 12.
- Divide total completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.
- Add the two percentages.

Pay
$51,210 - $66,574 per year
