Medical Instrument Technician (Cardiac Cath Lab Tech)

About the role

This position involves performing at an expert level for all essential functions and responsibilities as listed for lower grade levels. It also entails working with the interdisciplinary team to obtain inpatient add-on information, patient history, labs, procedure type, and correcting discrepancies or communicating contraindications to procedures.

Responsibilities

• Scrub, circulate, and monitor to assist the cardiologist, electrophysiologist, and fellows during procedures.
• Has extensive knowledge of procedures and equipment including Intracardiac echocardiography, Intravascular ultrasound, fractional flow reserve, atherectomy devices, Impella, Intra-aortic balloon pump, optical coherence tomography, inflation devices, pericardiocentesis with drainage, cardiac biopsies, ablations, 3D mapping, temporary pacemakers, devices, intracoronary pressure measurements, cardioversion, central line placement, selective peripheral arteriograms.
• Expert knowledge of closure devices and hemostasis techniques, capable of teaching others on proper deployment to prevent vascular complications.
• Absolutely adheres to radiation safety standards, anticipates patient needs, collects radiation monitoring data, and updates fluoroscopy settings.
• Assists with obtaining needed supplies from outside facilities and appropriately documents all transactions.
• Participates in Quality Assurance/Improvement processes and actively promotes them.
• Solves technical problems requiring coordination with others to resolve.
• Combines knowledge with resourcefulness, initiative, and independent judgment to locate precedents and resolve application details.

Qualifications

Requires at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities are necessary, including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels, manage and supervise employees, and provide staff development and training. RCIS and RCES certifications are preferred, along with 2 years of Invasive Cardiovascular Catheterization Technologist experience.

Skills

Strong proficiency in written and spoken English is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable.

Pay

Competitive salary and regular salary increases. Above minimum rate of the grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA.

Schedule

Monday through Friday, 0730-1600. Periods of "on call" status are required for 24/7 coverage for emergencies. Must be able to report to duty within 30 minutes when in "on call" status.
