Medical Examiner Investigator

Part-time position located at 4451 South 2700 West, Taylorsville, Utah, 84129. Hourly wage range: $24.95 - $42.38. This is an in-office/on-site role.

About The Role

The Office of the Medical Examiner (OME) seeks a Medicolegal Death Investigator to provide scene and telephonic response to deaths reported to the OME. The Investigations section is responsible for investigating all deaths under OME jurisdiction as stated in Utah Code 26B-8-205, including initial scene response, coordinating transportation of decedents, processing evidence, identifying decedents, and following up on investigations to aid in determining cause and manner of death. Due to the nature of this position, compliance with the Utah Department of Health Employee Immunization policy is required. Travel is required, and investigators must respond to calls within 30 minutes anywhere in Salt Lake County.

Responsibilities

• Handle phone calls reporting deaths and respond to death scenes.
• Conduct investigations, including researching and gathering information, interviewing witnesses, and performing real-time database direct entry.
• Prepare investigative reports, handle evidence, move remains, and determine jurisdiction of deaths reported to the OME.
• Assist medical examiners/forensic pathologists with completing documentation of evidence, chain of custody, reports, and records gathering.
• Understand and apply laws and regulations regarding death investigation in Utah.
• Respond to inquiries and complaints, provide information as allowed by law, explain policies and procedures, and facilitate issue resolution.
• Facilitate information exchange between investigators and organ/tissue donation coordinators for timely donations.
• Coordinate information exchanges with law enforcement, treating physicians, attorneys, and families.
• Perform other duties, tasks, and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in forensic science, nursing, a biological science, criminal justice, or a related field.
• One (1) year of directly related experience in medical, criminal, or death investigation, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must pass a criminal background check and fingerprint background check.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Valid driver's license; travel required (may use a State of Utah vehicle or personal vehicle with mileage reimbursement).

Preferences

• Experience as a medicolegal death investigator.
• Scene investigative experience (CSI, detective, law enforcement officer, etc.).
• Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI).

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand for long periods, hike mountainous terrain, or walk over rough surfaces.
• Ability to bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, or lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner or for long periods.
