About the Role

This opportunity is for a post-bachelor's or post-master's candidate who will participate in research projects within the Patient and Casualty Evacuation Research (PACER) group at USAARL. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain experience investigating novel technologies that will enhance flight medics' ability to attend to patients in the medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) aircraft. You will engage in studies for future Army MEDEVAC and/or casualty evacuation platforms, and you will participate in research activities associated with the performance of care givers in the en route care environment.

About USAARL

The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL), located at Fort Rucker, Alabama, aims to deliver aeromedical innovation and solutions – using rigorous research, advanced testing, and multidisciplinary collaboration – to set standards and design systems that save lives and optimize Warfighter performance. USAARL research focuses on the en route care environment, warfighter performance, and injury biomechanics and protection.

The Laboratory's highly skilled workforce consists of rated aviators, medical professionals, doctoral- and masters-level researchers, and research technicians.

PACER Research Focus

PACER aims to protect patients during medical evacuation transport by studying the effects of the transport environment, reduction of vehicle vibration, improvement of immobilization techniques, and testing novel technologies for medical evacuation applications. The group also examines ways to increase medical provider performance by studying provider workload, task saturation, enhanced patient awareness, occupational injury prevention, and medical interior design enhancements. PACER partners with other Army organizations to explore autonomous patient care and transport of patients on non-traditional platforms, such as unmanned aircraft/ground systems.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a BS or MS in engineering, bioengineering/biomedical engineering, biological/biosystems engineering, or other eligible engineering discipline. Degree must have been received within 60 months of the appointment start date.

Preferred Skills

  • Highly capable with Microsoft Office products
  • Demonstrated knowledge of test measurement instruments, e.g., multi-meters, cameras, thermometers, sensors

Appointment Length

The anticipated length of the appointment is for one year. The appointment may be extended for additional years depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Pay

The stipend range for this opportunity is between $55,000-$65,000 per year and will be determined by USAARL. Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

Security Clearance

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DoD or any other agency, this opportunity will require the selected candidate undergo a background investigation and must obtain a favorable clearance in order to participate. An interim clearance is required prior to the candidate starting his/her appointment.
