About the Role

We are looking for physicians with expertise in PM&R, Family Practice, Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine to deliver on Cohere’s program by determining the medical appropriateness of services. This role reports to the Managing Medical Director and is critical in a company rapidly scaling to impact millions of patients. This is a fast-paced environment favoring individuals who learn quickly, handle ambiguity, and communicate effectively across diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Support the clinical content team in reviewing the company’s clinical decision guidelines and evidence-based literature.
  • Provide expert input on content to influence physicians in medical care and improve patient outcomes.
  • Conduct timely medical reviews meeting Cohere’s quality and timeliness standards.
  • Make clinical determinations based on evidence-based criteria, clinical acumen, and medical society guidelines.
  • Document all communication and decision-making clearly and accurately in Cohere workflow tools for easy reference by members and providers.
  • Use correct templates for documenting medical necessity decisions during case review.
  • Conduct timely peer-to-peer discussions with treating providers to clarify clinical information and explain review outcomes, including feedback on alternate treatments based on medical necessity criteria and evidence-based research.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and service in interactions with Cohere teammates and providers.
  • Support projects aimed at building the team's clinical expertise and efficiency.
  • Contribute to operational improvements and member/provider experience involving clinical review tasks.

Requirements

  • Completed US-based residency program in PM&R, Family Practice, Pediatrics, or Internal Medicine.
  • Board certification as an MD or DO with a current unrestricted state license to practice medicine; must maintain credentials to retain the position.
  • 5+ years of clinical practice beyond residency/fellowship in the specified specialties.
  • Understanding of Therapy programs (PT/OT/SLP) on outpatient and inpatient bases.
  • Ability to excel in a matrix organization.
  • Comfortable with technology and willing to learn new software tools.
  • Understanding of managed care regulatory structure and processes.
  • Detail-oriented, flexible, and able to work autonomously with little supervision.
  • 1+ years of managed care utilization review experience in Therapy (PT/OT/SLP) highly desirable.
  • Licensure in AR, MO, MN, NC, IN, TX, or NE is highly desirable; willingness to obtain additional state licenses with Cohere's support.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $210,000 - $260,000 annually, as part of a total benefits package including health insurance, 401k, and bonus. Individual pay is based on qualifications, experience level, skillset, and internal alignment.
