Established in 1927 by Ralph M. Waters, we are proud to be the first academic anesthesiology department in the United States. Our department is deeply committed to a tripartite mission of clinical care, education, and research, as well as to the success and well-being of our teams. As dedicated clinicians, we provide comprehensive anesthesiology, critical care and pain management services to communities across the UW Health system of care. As educators, we are passionate about training the next generation of anesthesiologists and clinical anesthetists. As researchers, we support basic, translational and clinical science with a commitment to advancing the future of anesthesiology. As a community, we foster an inclusive and supportive environment where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive in their pursuit of excellence in patient care, teaching, and discovery. The Department embraces both independent and collaborative work-styles. Our general approach is to empower individuals to work independently through thorough and hands-on training and onboarding, while also having regular meetings with collaborators and support staff within the department to foster a strong team environment.
