Position Summary
The Medical Director serves as the senior physician leader at Damien Center and is responsible for the overall clinical direction, quality, and integrity of medical care delivery across the organization.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership across all medical services, including HIV care, primary care, prevention, and sexual health services.
- Establish, implement, and maintain clinical protocols aligned with current standards and best practices, including CDC, HRSA, and IDSA/HIVMA guidance.
- Ensure excellence in HIV care outcomes, including viral suppression, retention in care, and adherence to evidence-based treatment guidelines.
- Lead adoption and advancement of innovative care models such as rapid start ART, same-day PrEP, and low-barrier access to care.
- Serve as the clinical authority on complex patient care issues and provider consultation needs.
- Directly supervise all medical providers, including physicians, nurse practitioners, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), and physician assistants.
- Establish provider expectations related to productivity, panel size, documentation, patient access, and quality outcomes.
- Conduct provider performance evaluations and provide coaching, mentorship, and clinical leadership.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and professional development of medical providers.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous improvement across the medical team.
- Oversee clinical quality programs and directly supervise staff responsible for quality improvement and performance measurement.
- Monitor and improve key clinical and operational metrics, including viral suppression, third next available appointment, no-show rates, patient engagement, and continuity of care.
- Ensure compliance with HRSA FQHC requirements, Ryan White program standards, and all applicable regulatory and accreditation expectations.
- Lead and support quality improvement initiatives using data-driven approaches to improve patient outcomes and care delivery.
- Partner on clinical risk management, patient safety, and standardization of care practices.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on clinical strategy, service line development, and long-term planning.
- Support integration of behavioral health, oral health, substance use services, and social determinants of health into medical care delivery.
- Advance innovative programs including sexual wellness services, outreach-based care, telehealth, and other emerging care models aligned with Damien Center’s mission.
- Collaborate with Support Services, Community Health, Behavioral Health, Dental, and Pharmacy teams to ensure coordinated, whole-person care.
- Serve as a key clinical voice internally and externally with hospitals, health systems, public health agencies, and community partners.
- Support advocacy, education, and community engagement efforts related to HIV care, prevention, and health equity.
- Participate in leadership meetings, organizational planning, and cross-functional decision making.
- Support budgeting, staffing models, provider scheduling, and resource allocation for clinical programs.
- Ensure appropriate documentation standards and effective use of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Education And/or Experience
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required.
- Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or Infectious Disease.
- Minimum of 8 years of clinical experience, with significant experience in HIV care strongly preferred.
- Prior clinical leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience in a community health center, FQHC, or Ryan White-funded setting preferred.
- Work or lived experience may substitute for education requirements on a case-by-case basis.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Deep expertise in HIV treatment, prevention, and the HIV care continuum, as well as a strong understanding of HRSA, FQHC, and Ryan White program requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to health equity and serving marginalized and medically underserved populations is essential.
- Strong leadership and team development skills, along with the ability to interpret data and lead clinical quality improvement efforts.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills are required, as well as strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records and healthcare systems is also required.
