Medical Director, Liver Transplant

Medical Director, Liver Transplantation Center is a physician leader, jointly accountable to the Service Line Vice President, the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, and the clinical section chief that works to advance the delivery of clinical care and operational performance of the Liver Transplant Center in partnership with dyad nursing partner, administrative leadership, or other key stakeholders.The incumbent medical director is accessible to the Liver Transplant Center during routine hours for escalation of issues, clinical or operational, as they arise. The incumbent medical director will provide oversight, feedback, and ensure accountability for physician performance on the Liver Transplant Center, including escalation of issues as needed, regardless of the physician's clinical discipline, employment, or other factors. The incumbent medical director will also collaborate with patient experience, regulatory affairs, social work, or any other work group as necessary.The inpatient medical director will also serve as a partner in, and be accountable for, the implementation of process improvement, quality and safety, access, patient experience, or any other improvement project in the Liver Transplant Center, including but not limited to the engagement, monitoring, and performance of the clinical teams providing care on the Liver Transplant Center, either primary team or consulting service. Requirements• Medical Degree with an active clinical practice• Member of the Medical Staff in good standing• 2 years’ experience providing clinical care at YNHH or other similar medical center Medical Director Responsibilities & Expectations• Meet regularly with local leadership dyad/triad/administrative partners to coordinate andexecute operational plans• Responsible for monitoring the performance, behavior, and oversight of physicians (primaryteam and consulting services) providing care in the Liver Transplant Center, and respondingto issues that arise, including escalating issues to Quality & Safety leadership, the Chief ofService, or Office of the Chief Medical Officer, when indicated.• Responsible for operational metrics as designated by YNHH leadership, including thedrafting and execution of an annual plan in coordination with Service Line Leadership, ChiefMedical Officer, Chief Clinical Officer, or other YNHHS leadership. (Examples: LOS, patientexperience, appointment availability, Quality and Safety, room utilization, etc). These plansand performance metrics will be reviewed annually by the service line leader and clinicalchief.• Serve as a physician leader accountable for quality and safety in the assigned area incollaboration with nursing, quality and safety staff, and other stakeholders as appropriate• When not accessible for 5 or more consecutive working days, such as PTO/vacation, theinpatient medical director will designate a specific individual(s) to provide continuity in theduties outlined here.• At all times, maintain an exemplary level of professionalism, patient care, and collegiality ina manner that serves as a continuous role model for all physicians at YNHH and support aculture of respect and collaboration among all.• When requested, serve as an active participant representing physician viewpoints onhospital or health system committees.• Participate in at least one professional development activity offered through the YNHHSInstitute for Excellence, or similar program outside of YNHHS, related to leadership, systemredesign, quality improvement, communication skills, or patient safety per calendar year. Role-Specific Responsibilities:• Review liver transplant protocols with the Surgical Director of Liver Transplant andtransplant program personnel to assure they meet OPTN/UNOS and CMS requirementsfor liver transplant. These protocols will be reviewed and ratified at the Transplant QA PImeetings. Changes from prior protocols will be reviewed with transplant team at themeetings, disseminated to team members and posted for internal programmatic use.• Participate in the multidisciplinary liver transplant candidate selection meetings andprovide oversight to ensure candidates meet listing criteria, or criteria for any change intheir listing status, as outlined in the Center protocols.• Meet regularly with the Director of Liver Transplant Surgery and administrativeleadership to review metrics (schedule, workflows, productivity reports, performancemeasures, patient experience, etc.) and help coordinate operational plans to improveclinical care in the designated program.• Participate in Transplant Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement conferencesand initiatives and assist in preparation for site visits (OPTN/UNOS, CMS, DPH, JCAHO,etc.
