About the role

Provides clinical leadership to all medical services provided within the Agency. The incumbent primarily spends time delivering direct services (i.e., psychiatric diagnosis and treatment), with a concurrent broad range of varying daily activities both scheduled and unscheduled. Treatment oversight is provided to other therapists and service providers. Administrative and clinical supervision is provided to other agency psychiatrists and nurse practitioners. As Medical Director, the incumbent directs and oversees all agency medical services.

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized medical diagnostic and treatment services to consumers (including adults, children, and adolescents).
  • Coordinates the delivery of all medical services provided by the Agency.
  • Provides clinical supervision and medical oversight to other licensed service providers, including fulfilling compliance requirements for Medicaid and Medicare (e.g., approving therapist treatment plans, etc.).
  • Affords assistance to the Executive Director in planning, developing, and implementing Agency programs and services with medical components.
  • Affords assistance to crisis intervention and emergency services staff with triage as needed.
  • Determines client illnesses and carries out the necessary recovery-oriented treatment services.
  • Makes consultations, educations, and other professional services within the Agency.
  • Serves as supervisor for psychiatric nurse practitioner(s) employed by another agency/entity.
  • Documents services as required by State and Federal laws and regulations.
  • Oversees general policy and operation of pharmacy services within the CSB.
  • Maintains effective relationships with co-workers and customers/consumers based on courtesy, compassion, and respect.
  • Makes effective use of available technology, including computers, e-mail, voice mail, electronic health records, and e-prescribing.
  • Is responsible for other duties as assigned, consistent with established policy and procedures.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of community mental health services and behavioral health disorders; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and substance use in adults, children, and adolescents; in-depth knowledge of treatment protocols for adults with severe and persistent mental illness, and children with serious emotional disturbance; consultative skills regarding the treatment of individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability, and substance use disorders; ability to work in collaboration with others within a recovery-focused service; ability to perform specialized evaluations; ability to respond to changing community needs and coordinate necessary medical department adjustments and changes; advanced skills in providing administrative and clinical supervision; ability to write concisely and effectively; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated good judgment; and technical proficiency in the use of electronic health records and e-prescribing software.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college and completion of an approved three year residency in psychiatry.
  • A license to practice medicine in Virginia.
  • Board certification in Psychiatry.
  • Experience in a behavioral health setting, preferably including experience providing clinical supervision.

Schedule

Regular office hours, Monday through Friday; additional hours as needed to perform job requirements.
