Medical Director

About the Role

The Medical Director provides oversight for the Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and delivers comprehensive professional outpatient primary medical services to enrolled patients of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), in accordance with the Veteran Affairs Primary Care Program. The role involves collaborating with the CBOC Clinic Manager to supervise day-to-day medical care delivery, ensuring effective operations, and participating in the Clinical Quality Assurance Program. The Medical Director supervises all assigned providers and ensures adherence to evidence-based practice standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide vision and direction for clinical services, including new or improved program implementation.
• Deliver primary and preventive medical care to meet patients' physical, mental, and emotional needs.
• Coordinate and participate in the recruitment and orientation of clinical staff, including physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
• Collaborate with the CBOC Clinic Manager to lead clinicians and implement Quality Performance Improvement Team (QPIT) strategic initiatives.
• Evaluate adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations to ensure compliance and patient safety.
• Design and participate in quality improvement, care management, risk management, peer review, utilization review, clinical outcomes, and health enhancement activities.
• Ensure consistency in evidence-based practice standards across the CBOC.
• Implement and attend provider huddles to address clinic operational limitations and daily work planning.
• Function as director for CLIA-waived laboratory testing.
• Expand clinical services by facilitating non-traditional encounters.
• Analyze data to meet Veteran Administration (VA) clinical performance standards.
• Participate on the STGi Performance Excellence Team (PET).
• Establish a collaborative practice agreement with clinic APRNs/PAs and provide oversight and mentorship to other providers.
• Evaluate and maintain universal precautions and infection control practices.
• Administer medications per facility protocols.
• Maintain the VISTA clinic reminder tracking system and notifications for enrolled patients.
• Comply with STGi policies and VA contract regulations.

Requirements

• Active, full, and unrestricted medical license in Mississippi.
• Board-certified by the ABMS in Internal Medicine or Family Practice (or board-eligible).
• Current and unrestricted DEA registration.
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN).
• Knowledge of professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques aligned with community and VA standards of practice.
• Knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, including desired effects, side effects, complications, and usage considerations.
• Experience with safe and reasonable practices regarding opioid medications for chronic pain.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Software and proficiency with electronic medical records systems.
• Exceptional verbal, written, and telephone communication skills, with the ability to handle difficult situations diplomatically.
• Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking abilities.

Qualifications

• Doctorate Degree in Medicine from an accredited college approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association, or a Doctorate degree in Osteopathy from a college accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, or permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
• Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification (ACGME or AOA approved). Non-U.S. residencies must be followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States.
• Experience in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.
• Formal management and leadership courses and certifications are highly desired.

Working Conditions

• Moderate physical activity, including handling objects up to 25 pounds or standing/walking for more than four hours per day.
• Work is primarily performed in a typical interior/office environment.
• Required to respond to medical emergencies within the clinic, which may involve fast walking or jogging.
