Medical Director

About the role

This position combines clinical psychiatric services with Medical Director responsibilities, providing leadership and coordination for medical services across multiple agency programs including the Crisis Receiving Center, Crisis Stabilization Program, ACT Program, MAT/OBOT services, and Residential Services.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Clinical Services Director in setting policy and procedures for medical services delivery, including maintaining the Medical Services Policy Manual
• Provides input to administration regarding trends and needs in service delivery affecting Medical Services
• Coordinates and leads monthly meetings of Medical Services staff
• Conveys information relevant to agency policy and medical care delivery to Medical Services staff
• Coordinates Medical Services activities and assists in developing policies for medical services provision within agency programs
• Provides leadership in development and maintenance of electronic medical records and electronic prescribing in coordination with IT
• Develops and reviews schedules of Medical Services staff
• Collaborates with Clinical Services Director in setting goals and rating performance of Medical Services staff
• Reviews CARF standards as they pertain to medical policies and provides guidance during CARF survey process
• Conducts psychiatric assessments through history review, documentation, interviewing and observing patients and relevant others
• Determines diagnoses and provides treatment including prescription medications, brief psychotherapy, and coordinating care with other providers
• Educates patients on their condition verbally and through printed materials
• Obtains informed consent for psychotropic medications
• Performs mental status and other relevant medical examinations
• Prepares and maintains required medical and administrative documentation including clinical notes, reports, letters, and forms in a timely manner
• Facilitates obtaining prior authorizations for medication and services
• Provides cross-coverage treatment services for other providers on a temporary basis
• May provide technical supervision of nurse practitioners and physician assistants
• May provide consultation, education, and training services to individuals and agencies
• May provide crisis intervention/emergency services in concert with other staff
• May assist the Clinical Services Director and Medical Director in establishing agency policy and procedures for medical services delivery
• May advise agency leadership regarding developments in the field affecting administration and delivery of medical services
• May assist in coordinating medical services with other agency programs
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Extensive knowledge of principles, standards, practices, and techniques related to Psychiatry
• Extensive knowledge of safe and effective prescribing of psychiatric medication
• Extensive knowledge of individual therapy, counseling practices, and risk assessment for the mentally ill
• Extensive knowledge of laws and legal procedures relating to voluntary and involuntary hospital admission
• Knowledge of community resources, hospitalization and crisis intervention options, treatment providers, and other agencies serving the mentally ill population
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with individuals served and their support systems
• Ability to function calmly in stressful, possibly crisis situations
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to assess risk and prioritize service demands
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and community partners
• Ability to prepare and maintain professional patient medical records in a timely manner
• Ability to perform computer skills including desktop and internet navigation, typing, copy/paste, password management, printing, email management, video conferencing, Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook), and Adobe/PDF documents
• Ability to learn specific electronic health record and prescribing programs used by the agency
• Ability to professionally receive supervision, direction, and feedback from supervising staff
• Ability to work within a large government-administered organization and balance agency, community, and state needs with those of individuals served
• Ability to confidently provide oral and written testimony in court if required
• Ability to help train, supervise, and evaluate other clinical professionals seeking/maintaining licensure

Qualifications

• Education and Training: Doctor of Medicine (MD or DO) with completion of an approved residency in Psychiatry
• Preferred Experience: Some professional clinical experience providing care to the mentally ill in a community mental health setting
• Required Licensure and Certifications: License to practice Medicine in Virginia; Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; Valid VA driver's license
