About the role

This position is part of the enterprise-wide Medical Office and is based at RIBC. The position is part-time; the holder of this position is required to spend 8 hours per week on-site at RIBC.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical directorship for the technical and clinical operations of the blood center laboratories at RIBC, as well as provide support and guidance to collections staff, other internal stakeholders, and customer hospitals.
  • Support teaching, quality improvement and continuous learning.
  • Support management in making informed medical decisions and develop and review technical and medical policies.
  • Serve as the CLIA and New York State Laboratory Director and New York State Technical Director for RIBC.
  • Cover RIBC phone calls (remote) for a week at a time, as assigned, up to 26 weeks per year.
  • Provide part-time coverage on donor criteria questions for RIBC.
  • Makes decisions per medical criteria and replies to donor and hospital questions.
  • Reviews and provides critical input regarding procedures, job aids, work instructions and medical criteria for use by front line staff.
  • Participate (on a part-time basis) in teaching activities, including occasionally (1-2x per year) presenting on NYBCe webinar series, including Essentials of Transfusion Medicine, Lab Week, and Beyond Essentials.
  • Support the planning development of annual Essentials of Blood Banking (EBB) on-site learning.
  • Develop close relationships with clinical staff and front-line staff and provide expert consultation internally within RIBC and NYBCe and externally to hospitals.
  • Affirm participation in quality assurance activities and high performance of assigned program and services.

Requirements

  • Education Qualifications: M.D. Or D.O. Must Have Board Certification In Clinical Pathology, Hematology, Or Pediatric Hematology Plus Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, And Ability To Obtain Medical Licenses in: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York NY State Laboratory Director Certificate of Qualification (CQ); NY State Technical Director CQ in the Blood Bank Collection – Comprehensive category.
  • Experience: At least 1 year experience in clinical/laboratory aspects of transfusion and apheresis medicine beyond transfusion medicine fellowship training medicine. Such experience should include medical supervision of transfusion services and/or blood donor activities.
  • Professional Licences: Currently have, or ability to obtain with 6 months of employment (1) a full license to practice medicine in the following states: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York; (2) NYS Laboratory Director CQ; (3) NYS Technical Director CQ in Blood Collection – Comprehensive.
  • On-Site Requirement: Required to be on-site at RIBC for 8 hours/week.

  • Ability to provide medical directorship face-to-face, via phone/web-meeting or on-call to various groups.
  • Ability to lead, direct and mentor staff.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • High level of interpersonal skills to handle a variety of complex issues and situations.
  • Demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy in dealing with a variety of staff up to and including executive leadership.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and with authority, both in writing and verbally, to others in one-on-one or small group settings.
  • Ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization and customers in a helpful, courteous and friendly manner while demonstrating sensitivity to and respect for diverse populations.
  • Ability to plan and organize job tasks or resources in an efficient manner.
  • Ability to be responsive and available to management in order to address issues and concerns as they arise.
