About the role

Optimus Health Care—the largest provider of primary health care services in Fairfield County—seeks an Adult Medicine Medical Director with three to five years of clinical management experience. This role is 40% administration with the additional 60% devoted to direct patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Informatics Manager to develop and optimize EPIC workflows for patient documentation, in-basket tasks, and WIPs.
  • In collaboration with Nursing Management and Practice Manager, ensure adequate clinician staffing at all clinical sites; this may include moving staff where needed and/or providing additional direct patient care.
  • Monitor clinician clinical performance, ensuring completion of Peer Review activities for clinicians providing care in the discipline(s) under their supervision.
  • Ensure clinicians adhere to daily huddles and other protocols designed to assist in the delivery of high-quality care and the achievement of organizational goals.
  • Advocate for organizational initiatives and demonstrate the ability to pivot easily and effectively between clinical and administrative priorities, giving appropriate weight and attention to each.
  • Provide clinical supervision to clinical staff, including annual performance appraisal participation; responsible for evaluating clinicians’ panels (panel management), ensuring work in progress (WIP) is completed, and executing regular responsibilities as outlined on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Ensure and facilitate the prompt submission of clinical patients encounter data necessary for tracking and billing.
  • Review and resolve clinical patient complaints with Practice Manager, Nurse Manager, and clinician(s) involved as well as Director Patient Experience where necessary; and regularly share results of OHC’s patient satisfaction surveys with respective clinician(s) for improvement where appropriate.
  • Attend daily huddles of clinical teams to ensure adherence to best practice(s); attend meetings of the clinical departments and other departments as needed; support CMO by ensuring participation in regular monthly meetings of clinicians to ensure effective communication and compliance with HRSA requirements and Joint Commission mandates.
  • Work with the Practice Managers and Administrative Assistant/Clinician Liaison to establish and maintain clinician schedules including on-call schedules as indicated, clinical assignments, and rotations; support Practice Manager in providing coverage for scheduled and unscheduled absences; work collaboratively with other members of senior staff on operational policies and procedures.
  • Attend Risk Assessment/Performance Improvement (RAPI) Committee and other organizational committee meetings as scheduled (or arrange alternate representation as needed) and bring information back to share with staff; participate with other committee members in the development and oversight of organizational policies, procedures, business models, and strategies.
  • Serve as collaborating physician for clinicians in his/her/their department. Supervise clinician onboarding in department; provide 3-month performance appraisal and annual performance appraisals thereafter. May supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals and/or students in their area of expertise.
  • Advises, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates the performance of clinicians under direct supervision in conjunction with the Human Resources department. Approves time-off requests for clinicians under direct supervision always ensuring adequate staffing coverage. Participates in recruitment/retention activities including interviews for clinicians for designated sites.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of patients in a diverse community.
  • Ability to work independently, and to interact with colleagues and other staff in a team environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of modern principles and techniques of general medicine and public health, as traditionally practiced.
  • The ability to work well under pressure, analyze and evaluate individual members’ needs, reach sound conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in the area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of the availability of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in the area of medical expertise.
  • Knowledge of and efficient use of electronic medical records; EPIC preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

Skills

  • Bilingual English, Spanish desirable but not required.
  • Current unrestricted Connecticut License to practice medicine as an MD or DO.
  • Active Federal DEA and Controlled Substance Registration.
  • Board Certified in Specified Area of Medical Specialty.
  • Current CPR certification and ACLS certification.
