Medical Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) Faculty Research Fellowship
What will I be doing?
This faculty research opportunity involves participating with USAISR engineers, developers and research scientists in research projects focused on developing medical clinical decision support systems (CDSS) with specific focus in extended reality technologies and other translational systems. As the selected ORISE participant, you will engage in hypothesis-driven experimental design on human factors engineering, usability testing, clinical performance testing, and medical artificial intelligence modeling all aimed at combat casualty care optimization.
Project activities
- Clinical research utilizing augmented/mixed reality systems
- Sensor and medical device with artificial intelligence (AI) integration evaluations
- Creating innovative solutions for immersive clinical guidance systems

What is the anticipated start date?
USAISR is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the provisions?
- You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

About USAISR
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employment relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Qualifications
- You must be a current faculty member at an accredited institution and have a Doctoral degree in Computer, Information and Data Sciences, Engineering, Bioinformatics or other eligible discipline.
Preferred skills
- Experience conducting human subject research, including usability and clinical performance testing
- Experience in creating realistic medical, clinical, or field-testing scenarios
- Experimental design and evaluation skills
- Strong technical writing skills for documentation, reports, and presentations
